PRP - Platelet Rich Plasma

What is Platelet Rich Plasma “PRP”?

Your blood is basically made of two components, one solid, and one liquid.

The solid part contains your red and white blood cells, proteins, and specialized cells known as platelets. Platelets play an important role in healing.

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, and it is naturally present in blood throughout the body. Platelets in the blood naturally help to stimulate tissue healing through the stimulation and recruitment of stem cells, cytokines and other pain-reducing growth factors. Thus, Platelet rich plasma is plasma that has been “super-charged” with many more platelets than what is normally found in your blood. In “platelet rich plasma” the concentration of platelets, and the accompanying healing “growth factors,” are as much as 10 times greater than “ordinary” plasma.

Growth Factors play an extremely important role in healing injuries.

In the case of hard to heal wounds, PRP therapy has been proven to “jump start” the healing

PRP is carefully taken directly from a patient’s own blood, which is spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma. This plasma is then injected into the affected area where pain or damaged tissue resides.
